At OUSD, we are lucky to have a department dedicated to our LGBTQ+ students at the district level, GSA / Rainbow Clubs at schools are common, and specific legal protections have been granted by the school board, California, and Federal laws (see our “Know your rights” page for more).
On-site support at school
GSA (“Gender and Sexuality Alliance”) and Rainbow Clubs
- Rainbow Clubs: Elementary School
- GSA Clubs: Middle and High School
Did you know that GSA and Rainbow Clubs are open to all students, not just those who identify as LGBTQ+? They’re a great way to meet people, have fun, and get help if you’re experiencing any gender- and sexuality-related challenges (even if they aren’t school-specific). In addition to providing community and support, school culture is more likely to make a positive shift when these clubs exist.
Each club has at least one staff liaison who can provide on-site support, assistance, and guidance, as well as getting and giving feedback from and to the district.
No club at your school? Please talk to your principal or contact the district office about getting one started!
On-Site Health Clinics
Many OUSD campuses have health clinics that provide on-site healthcare; if your school has one, you can ask about resources for LGBTQ+ students. Some clinics can help navigate name changes, provide shapewear, and/or support gender-affirming care.
Your GSA / Rainbow Club Liaison should know more and be able to answer any questions you may have, but if not please contact Schmian Evans at the district office.
District-level support
Through OUSD’s Healthy Oakland Teens Office, there is a department dedicated to LGBTQ+ programming; Schmian Evans (uses all pronouns) is our LGBTQ+ Programming Specialist. The department’s web page has general information and specific resources for both families and teachers.
Family feedback is a critical component of activating change at the district level!
We encourage you to share your thoughts and concerns with this office; your voice might just provide the push needed to make a difference for students across Oakland.
This office can offer you assistance and information on a wide range of topics, including (but not limited to):
- School placement: If you will be changing schools, reach out for site-specific information and to be connected with your new site’s GSA / Rainbow Club Liaisons
- Name / Gender Changes: This can be done independently (see our resource page for more information), but assistance is available if needed.
- Gender Support Plans: Some schools can follow a “Gender Support Plan” to ensure a student’s gender identity is respectfully observed; email Schmian for more information.
- Professional Development (“P.D.”): If you feel that teachers or other staff at your school would benefit from specific training around LGBTQ+ issues, please ask your GSA / Rainbow Club liaison(s) to begin that process with the district office.
Any issues or concerns you aren’t able to resolve at your school site can be brought to the office’s attention; send an email to request assistance or further information.
